Personal Review:
So, I’m kind of a big Skinny Puppy fan, and then I’m also a huge fan of their work with Dwayne Goettel (this, “Yo’ Pusface!” and then Dwayne’s work with Psyche) anyways, here is their 12″ single of “Stairs and Flowers”.
The A-Side opens with “Stairs and Flowers (Def Wish Mix)” and you know, it does stick to the original mix, and it has all the same musicianship the original had, and it’s not a bad song, I definitely love this song, but I find it sounds a little too upbeat for Puppy. Then it goes back onto the same song, “Stairs and Flowers (Too Far Gone)” and I believe this one is the original mix? I don’t really know, it’s basically the same – almost, but it is danceable. I’m not too sure.
Anyways, what really makes this 12″ Single great is the B-Side. Which has two of my favorite Puppy songs, “Chainsaw” opens the B-Side. Which literally opens with the sound of a chainsaw starting, followed by drumming and screaming. Come on, it’s great! There even some vocals. There is definitely a lot going on here in this song. The single ends with my favorite Puppy song (of all time) “Assimilate (Remix)” and although it’s listed as a remix, it’s the only version of this song I actually know, and it’s the only version anyone should know, it’s just too great, musically and vocally. Lots of vocals. Some screaming. Drum machines! All in all, a pretty great single.
