The Liner/Sleeve Notes:
“Greetings:
We are certainly thankful that the Lord has made it possible for us to record this album. We want to say a hearty thank you to each one who had a part in it, to the musicians and also the engineer. We wish to thank Rev. Paul Dougan, pastor of the Friendly Pentecostal Church of God in Van Buren, Arkansas for allowing us to make the picture in his church for the front of our album.
Our group is made up of Huber Moore, who is m.c., rhythm guitar player, and also sings both lead and alto. His wife, Virginia sings lead and also plays the autoharp. Beverly Mitchell sins alto and plays lead guitar.
We trust that you will remember us in your prayers that the Lord will keep His hand upon us as we travel from place to place telling the good news that Jesus still saves.
Your Friends in Christ,
The Gospel Cavaliers
The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of them that fear him; he will also hear their cry, and will save them.
Psalms 145:18:19”
Personal Review:
So, I’ve seen this record reviewed on other websites out there and always wanted to do it myself, and suddenly I came across a copy and here we are!
The album opens with the title track “He Promised to Be There” which was written by Hubert Moore, and well Hubert has a pretty southern voice, and the musicianship isn’t bad at all, the backing vocals are pretty good too. I always find it neat how some bands go without doing any drums on their albums. It’s neat how it works. After that comes the song “Moving Day” which is sung by Virginia (autoharp) and she too, has a very, very southern voice, but that guitar playing makes up for any flaws, which there are none because this album is absolutely amazing thus far! Then after that comes “One of These Days” sung by Hubert again, his voice is definitely a softer voice, it’s pretty good. I find the track breaks are very minimal between songs, it’s like a constant flow of Gospel. I’m pretty partial to Hubert’s vocals. They’re great. Then comes the track “Had It Not Been” and I’m pretty sure that I’ve heard this song before, but hey, I don’t know, all I do know is that I like this song and the Gospel Cavaliers are pretty great! They even have the Einert Family backing them up! “What Would You Do” comes next, and it features spoken word parts by Hubert, and I’m guessing Beverly. Whoever the female speaking is, she has a very soft spoken and emotional voice, the musicianship is great. The A-Side ends with the song “The Angels Rejoiced Last Night” and Hubert’s vocals seem to be drowned out by the musicianship, but when the chorus comes around the song becomes pretty amazing.
The B-Side opens with the track “The Lighthouse” and it’s a pretty good track to open the B-Side, I definitely love the musicianship. “Twenty One” follows next, it has some pretty great piano playing and then comes another spoken word part by the same female again, and her voice is the one I want to talk me through every life event. I’m not really sure what this story is about, I’m getting that it’s a mothers story of her son growing to be 21… oh, and she’s dying. Wow. That is depressing. She’s dying, and wants her son to be 21. “I Feel Like Traveling On” follows next, and we’re back to Hubert singing, so everything is good. A lot of these songs I feel I can sing along to, because they’re pretty catchy. “Nail Scared Hand” comes next, and it’s another song written by Hubert, it’s a bit slower but still a good song. Then comes the song “Just For Me” which is sung again by Virginia, and it’s a good song. After that the album ends with “Shake Hands with Mother Again” and once more it’s sung by Virginia, and it’s a pretty decent ending track. I quite enjoyed the album. Though, I would like someone to hold me like how Virginia holds that autoharp on the cover.
