Personal Review:
Luie Luie (or Luis Johnston) famously known for his song the “Touchy” – which was released in 1974. Looking into Luie Luie’s career, he’s a painter, musician and screenwriter. He’s a multi-instrumentalist, he’s recorded a few 45s (obviously, this is one)
The A-Side of this 45 is the song “Bump Me Baby” and it’s not really like what you’d expect, you’ve got bass, guitar and drums. He delivers some soul-styled funk vocals, with a back beat that can really make you tap your feet. Going off of his more known LP, and hearing “El Touchy” and then this, the difference is vast. It is a great song. It’s an impressive arrangement with tremendous lyrics.
The B-Side is the song “Sunshine and Roses” and it’s a trumpet instrumental, now if you look up Luie Luie, you’ll see that he is renowned for his trumpet playing. He is accompanied by a guitarist on this instrumental, but we also get some bass and percussion as we go into the second half of the song. All in all, a well worth single. It’s got a nice relaxing sound to it. It does have a familiar beat to it that I just can’t quite put my finger on.
I’d love to see him and Chuck Mangione rip it together. That’d be intense.
