Anyone who had watched the WCCW or NWA in the early 80’s knows the name Von Erich, if not for David, then for at least one of the other brothers, Kerry, Kevin, Mike or Chris – or their father Fritz. They’re a wrestling family dynasty with a tragic history, as after David passed away in 1984, three of his four brothers followed after, Mike in 1987, Chris in 1991 and Kerry in 1993. Kerry Von Erich, probably the most known of the brothers, achieved fame in the WWE under the name The Texas Tornado and winning the Intercontinental Championship in 1990 and holding it for 84 days. So, back in 1984, while David was in Tokyo, Japan of Enteritis (from ruptured intestines), though there are varying theories. Now, back in David’s home state of Texas, Glen Goza, famous for his other songs used in the WCCW, such as “R-a-s-s-l-i-n” – penned this track in memory of David, which was played at his memorial. So, in 1985 on the Jeco Records label we have Glen Goza’s tribute to one of the greatest WCCW champions, David Von Erich.
“Heaven Needed a Champion” is obviously the A-Side, and it’s a nice song that recounts David’s short career before going off into the chorus, and praise of David. It’s got a really nice beat to it, and Glen does a great job and he wrote a really nice touching tribute to the great one, David Von Erich.
The B-Side is “David and the Poet” and it opens with a spoken word part, and obviously, this song too, is about David Von Erich. It’s got a relaxing keyboard backing as Glen speaks over the music, describing David and who he was. You can definitely tell that Glen was really a Von Erich fan from the emotion in his voice.
These two songs are not the only two songs that Glen Goza had written for the Von Erich’s, he also wrote a song for the youngest, Chris, in 1984 which can be heard here. A movie about the Von Erich’s is going to be released in December titled, “The Iron Claw”
