Merle Fischer – “How Do You Make Someone Happy / Special Hero”
Back around 2011 – 2012, I came across Merle Fischer’s “I Don’t Believe In If Anymore” and I bought my first copy, which is still sealed and framed on my wall. At the time, I could not bring myself to open it, the cover has absolutely one of the finest designs I have every seen. The colors absolutely pop, and it is a beautiful piece of art. But, I wanted to – I needed to hear her voice. So, I bought a secondary copy, which I wrote about here. Merle is a fine Canadian vocalist whose music should not be forgotten to the sands of time. I know one of her grandchildren had commented on my first post about her 1978 album, if you’re still following along, send me an email I would love to hear about Merle’s music career!
The A-Side of this fine 45 is Merle singing “How Do You Make Someone Happy” and it’s a love ballad to the core, delivered with such conviction that you can feel the emotion in Merle’s voice. It’s a wonderful, and I am glad Merle released it as a single.
The B-Side is “Special Hero” and although, on the B-Side of the LP, my favorite track is “Like a Child” – and I would’ve definitely loved to have that as the B-Side to this single, “Special Hero” is a good song just as well, giving off that Captain and Tennille vibe for me. Starting off a bit slow, with a funky bassline and percussion to match before it goes off into the chorus, Merle delivers the song perfectly.
I always do wonder where Merle is these days, I hope she is well. I would love to know if she recorded more.
