Sex Pistols – “Some Product – Carri On Sex Pistols”
Sunday night, I got the honor and privilege to see one of my favorite bands perform live – the Sex Pistols, albeit they did not have Johnny Rotten fronting the band, but as I’ve stated in my last post – the Sex Pistols have never really been about one sole vocalist, as several singers have been at the helm, but rather the collective sound of Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock. Currently, at the helm is ex-frontman of the hardcore punk band, Gallows, Frank Carter. Who, might I say, does a wonderful job as the vocalist for the Sex Pistols, and much like other people who have been the fronted the band, he brings his own style to what they do and gave a hell of a performance at the show. I unfortunately, did not get any good photos as I was really far back from the stage for the most part of it, so I’ve put some stills from my video captures below.
I did get a nice new Sex Pistols shirt though.
Anyways, onto the album.
So, I unfortunately did not get a sleeve with this album, as I found it housed in a copy of Def Leppard’s “Pyromania” – but essentially, this album is a collection of interview snippets, radio spots.
The album opens with “The Very Name ‘Sex Pistols’” which opens with a collection a series of snippets of news clips and advertisements pieced over some Sex Pistols songs. It’s very reminiscent of that Beatles Christmas album. It closes out with an excerpt of “Bodies” and some radio clips. “From Beyond the Grave” which is an interview with Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten, but with the focus being on Sid and how he joined the Sex Pistols. This is then followed-up and closed out with an interview with Steve Jones and Paul Cook titled “Big Tits Across America” which was done with a radio call-in, and basically, it starts with Steve Jones talking with a woman over the radio about her breasts, and then a call in asking about Iggy Pop. Various callers asking different questions.
“The Complex World of Johnny Rotten” opens the B-Side, which seems to start with some TV/Radio adverts before going into “Holidays in the Sun” for a moment, before going into an interview with Johnny Rotten, and I do have to say that interviews with Johnny Rotten are always something to be heard, he is such an opinionated and articulate person, and he knows how to make his words like weapons. It also features snippets of interviews with Johnny’s mother. “Sex Pistols Will Play” comes next, which starts with “Holidays in the Sun” again, in between a crowd of people shouting the title. It then goes into an interview with Steve Jones and Paul Cook once more, before ending with some song excerpts from “The Great Rock ‘N’ Roll Swindle“. “Is the Queen a Moron?” comes next, and it’s an interview regarding the lyrics of “God Save the Queen” and discussion of why it was such a seller. “The Fucking Rotter” closes out the album, which is that famous Bill Grundy, but essentially, Bill Grundy dared them to say something ‘outrageous’ after Steve Jones calls him out for talking to the girls (Siouxsie Sioux, in particular) that were with them, and Bill Grundy is greeted with being called a “You dirty sod. You dirty old man” to which Grundy, continues to goad them on leading to Steve finishing with “You dirty bastard, you dirty fucker. What a clever boy! You fucking rotter” and all hell broke loose on live Television, and the rest is history.
